Struggle Against Forgetting
“I hope that you won’t forget us.” So wrote my aunt to
her father when she was 14 years old, from the
Vel d’Hiv in 1942.
When I paint I create an object represents my ideas,
emotions, and convictions.
I use my experiences, I ask myself questions. Here,
memory is a central theme. By creating a painting,
which by its definition has a physical presence,
I am able to visualize a memory.
By visualizing a memory, creating a three-dimensional
object for the viewer, I maintain it, and offer it as a
way of presenting my belief that we must continue to
struggle against the natural condition of forgetting.
The object becomes an instrument of memory.
We look at the object, the painting, and we are forced
to remember.
